Galvanized steel pipe is a steel pipe that has been treated with zinc and has good corrosion resistance. SS400, SS490 and SS540 are steel grades specified in the Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS), representing different tensile strength grades.

1. Basic material properties

Definition of SS series steel:

SS (Steel Structure) is a rolled steel for structure in Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS G 3101), and the number represents the minimum tensile strength (unit: MPa).

SS400: Tensile strength ≥400MPa, low carbon steel, excellent weldability and formability.

SS490: Tensile strength ≥490MPa, medium strength steel, balanced strength and plasticity.

SS540: Tensile strength ≥540MPa, high strength steel, suitable for load-bearing structures.

Galvanizing process:

A zinc layer is formed on the surface of the steel pipe through hot-dip galvanizing to provide anti-corrosion protection and extend the service life (up to 20-50 years in outdoor environment).


2. Additional advantages of the galvanized layer

Corrosion resistance: The zinc layer isolates air and moisture, prevents the substrate from rusting, and is especially suitable for humid and salt spray environments (such as coastal areas).

Self-repairing ability: The sacrificial anode characteristics of zinc can provide electrochemical protection against local scratches.

Surface beauty: The galvanized layer is silver-gray and can be enhanced or dyed by passivation.


3. Application scenario recommendations

SS400 galvanized pipe: low-cost, light-load scenarios (such as greenhouse frames, wire casings).

SS490 galvanized pipe: medium dynamic load structures (such as storage shelves, conveyor brackets).

SS540 galvanized pipe: high-stress environment (such as high-voltage transmission towers, large bridge reinforcement).


4. Precautions

Processing restrictions: High-strength steel (such as SS540) requires a larger radius for cold bending to avoid cracks.

Post-welding treatment: High-temperature volatilization of the galvanized layer may produce pores. It is recommended to apply zinc paint after welding.

Standard compliance: It is necessary to confirm whether it meets the target market standards such as JIS, ASTM or GB/T 3091.
